Christiansen 3-Hitter Helps Mavs Split

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- Left-hander Jon Christiansen struck out 13 and held Augustana to three hits in leading the Mavericks to an 8-4 win in the first game of their North Central Conference doubleheader Friday. The Vikings rebounded to blank the Mavs 6-0 for a split in the second game.
The teams will close the regular season Saturday in a noon doubleheader at Ronken Field. UNO, now 23-24 overall and 13-11 in the league, needs one win over the Vikings (19-24 and 13-13) to advance to the NCC post-season tournament.
Kevin Whitman hit a two-run home run in the second and Sam Nocita tagged a two-run shot in the sixth to back Christiansen in the first game win. UNO grabbed the early lead on Troy Cloyd's RBI double in the top of the first to score Jake Wurth, then went ahead 3-0 on Whitman's seventh homer of the year in the second.
UNO bunched four hits in the fifth to add three more runs before Nocita's fifth homer of the year made it 8-1 in the sixth. The Vikings got to Christiansen (4-2) for three runs on two singles and an error in the bottom of the seventh.
In the second game, the Vikings' Troy Wunderlich fanned five, walked four and gave up a single to Jim Sledge in the first inning and a lead-off triple to Justin Kilker in the sixth to improve to 3-5.
Wunderlich was aided by a three-run first inning off UNO starter Greg Tubbesing (2-4). Kevin Ericson and Kevin Wiessner each had RBI singles and another run scored on an error. Augustana added an unearned run in the third and put the game away on RBI singles in the fourth by Gary Walz and Adam Waldorf.
