Westside Standout Signs Letter With Mavericks

Omaha Westside High School standout Denny Johnston has signed a national letter of intent to attend the University of Nebraska at Omaha and play basketball, head men's coach Kevin McKenna said Friday.
Johnston, a 6-4, 180-pound forward who averaged 16 points and 6.8 rebounds for the 21-5 Warriors last season, earned second-team all-Metro Conference honors and was an honorable mention all-state pick. Westside, under coach Dan Schinzel, was the state Class A runner-up and ranked No. 2 in the final state ratings.
Johnston, the son of Denny and Mary Johnston, will follow his brother, Patrick, who played baseball for the Mavericks from 2000-2003, and his father, who played baseball in the late 1960s, to UNO.
