Concordia Forces Sunday Game for Regional Title

Kristin Schmidt drove in the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning Saturday to give Concordia a 1-0 win over St. Cloud State and force a second championship game in the NCAA North Central Region tournament. The two teams will meet Sunday at 1 p.m. at Claussen-Westgate Field with the winner advancing to the national tournament in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
Kelly Schwietz doubled to lead off the eighth and then advanced to third on a bunt single by Jennifer
Pozzani. After a foul out and a strike out, Schmidt, the Golden Bears' pitcher, came to the plate with two outs and delivered a single down the leftfield line that scored Schwietz.
Schmidt (22-1) struck out six batters and allowed just three Huskie hits while SCSU pitcher Nicloe Webb struck out 11 and fell to 27-6.
Concordia has now won four straight tournament games after losing in the first round. The Golden Bears are making their first trip to the NCAA tournament.
Game 9: Concordia 8, North Dakota State 2
Concordia scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning on freshman Amanda Yurek's two-run double and sophomore Kristin Linell's two-run homer en route to a 8-2 victory over North Dakota State, advancing the Golden Bears to the championship game of the NCAA North Central Regional against St. Cloud State. The two will face off today at 2:30 with a second game scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m. if Concordia wins.
Concordia-St. Paul, in its first trip to the NCAA postseason, scored one run in each of the second, third, and fourth innings. Junior Shannon Miller blasted a solo home run in the top of the fourth inning to pad the Golden Bears' lead at 7-0.
North Dakota State catcher Cindy Castleberry notched her second home run of the tournament and her seventh and eighth RBIs with a two-run blast in the top of the sixth inning to close the gap to 7-2.
The Golden Bears picked up one more run in the bottom of the sixth to preserve the 8-2 victory.
Linell went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, Miller was 2-for-2 with one RBI, and Elizabeth Plante was 2-for-3 with one RBI to lead Concordia-St. Paul at the plate.
