Mavericks Outlast Wayne State in Five Games

Wayne, Neb. - The University of Nebraska at Omaha volleyball team outlasted Wayne State in a five-game marathon played at Rice Auditorium in Wayne Tuesday evening. UNO won the first two games 30-22 and 30-18, but Wayne State fought back to take games three and four by scores of 30-25 and 31-29. Trailing 9-8 in the deciding fifth game, the Mavericks scored seven of the next eight points to take the match 15-10. UNO improves to 9-3 on the season while Wayne State falls to 8-7.
Senior outside hitter Amy McLeay paced Nebraska-Omaha with 23 kills and 15 digs. Junior middle blocker Ashley Freeman also reached double digits in kills with 10. Junior Chelsea Miller and senior Julia McConahay led the Maverick defense with 22 digs apiece, followed by Jenny Rankin with 12 and Christie Johnson's 11. Johnson also dished out 48 set assists in the victory.
The Mavericks have now won all four of their five-game matches this season and are riding a four-match win streak.
Nebraska-Omaha opens the North Central Conference portion of the season this weekend when they travel to Grand Forks, N.D. on Friday, Sep. 24 for a 7 p.m. match with North Dakota (7-6/0-1). Nebraska-Omaha will battle St. Cloud State (8-5/0-1) at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
