Mavs Ends Road Skid With 4-1 Victory

BIG RAPIDS, MICH. - The UNO hockey team extended its CCHA unbeaten streak to five games with a 4-1 victory over Ferris State Saturday night at Ewigleben Ice Arena.
Nebraska-Omaha took three of four points from the Bulldogs in the two-game CCHA set and won its first road game since October 30. The tie and the win on the weekend against FSU marks the first time in 16 conference road series' that the Mavericks earned two or more points, dating back to December 6-7, 2002 at Lake Superior.
The teams skated to a scoreless tie in the opening period but the Mavericks had two goals disallowed in the process. Scott Parse had a goal waved off at the 15:15 mark because of an offsides call. Nearly three minutes later, it looked as if UNO would take its first lead but Bryan Marshall's tally was not allowed because of a penalty for holding the stick with 1:19 remaining.
Parse finally got the Mavericks on the board at 4:25 of the second period. This time it counted. Parse took a pass from Bill Thomas in the neutral zone and he broke away from FSU defenseman Alex Spezia to beat goaltender Mike Brown, five-hole, for a 1-0 lead.
Ferris State tied the score with 10:24 remaining in the second stanza on a power play goal by Mark Bomersback. UNO responded 25 seconds later and regained the lead when Brandon Scero scored his seventh goal of the year on a shot from the low left circle.
The Mavericks then took control of the game in the final 20 minutes. UNO started out the third period on the power play and capitalized 21 seconds into the man-advantage situation. Kaleb Betts scored on a one-timer from the right point that caught part of the post to give the Mavs a 3-1 lead. Bill Thomas gave UNO some more breathing room when he scored his 10th goal of the season on a breakaway at 7:54 for a three-goal lead.
Parse and Thomas both had a goal and two assists to lead the UNO attack.
The Mavericks (11-9-2, 9-7-2 CCHA) will travel to Oxford next week to take on Miami.
