Mavs Upset No. 16 Coyotes, 67-61

VERMILLION, S.D.-- Lindsey Petersen and JJ Smith each hit clutch three-point shots down the stretch and Karen Thies added a pair of free shots to help the Mavericks secure a 67-61 North Central Conference win Thursday night over No. 16 South Dakota.
The win, the third over a ranked opponent in the past four games, hiked UNO's records to 13-6 overall and 3-1 in the NCC, while the Coyotes fell to 12-5 and 1-2.
The Mavericks broke out front early and led by as many as 14 points before settling for a 35-27 halftime lead. South Dakota closed the gap the second half and took a 59-57 lead on a three-point play by Ashley Robinette.
Thies tied the game with a jumper with 2:24 left and Petersen broke the 59-all tie with a three-pointer with 1:48 left. After the Coyotes answered with a layup by Meghan Woster with 1:25 left, Smith nailed another three with 1:04 to play for a 65-61 lead.
Chelsie Groslie drew a charge by Woster to stop the Coyotes on their next possession and Thies hit two free shots a few seconds later to nail down the win, the Mavericks' eighth in the past 10 games.
Thies led the Mavs with 18 points, Smith added 17 and Petersen 13. UNO, outshot 50 percent to 42.4 percent from the floor, held a 41-27 advantage on the boards, including a 16-6 edge in offensive rebounds. Thies led the way with nine rebounds and Smith grabbed 7.
Robinette led USD with 16 points and Woster added 14.
UNO's next action will come Jan. 27 at St. Cloud State.
