
Mavericks Down Coyotes, 87-76

VERMILLION, S.D. -- The Mavericks stormed to a big lead and rode out a South Dakota comeback to post an 87-76 North Central Conference victory over the Coyotes Thursday night at the DakotaDome.
No. 23 UNO improved to 16-3 overall and 2-2 in the NCC while the No. 18 Coyotes fell to 15-2 and 2-1. Junior guard Calvin Kapels led the Mavericks with 20 points, Quantel Murphy added 15 and Levy Jones 14.
The Mavericks shot 58.8 percent the first half and took a 47-31 halftime lead. UNO increased the advantage to as many as 27, leading 59-32 just four and a half minutes into the second half after going on an 18-1 run after the break.
The Coyotes battled back, holding UNO without a field goal for nearly eight minutes, but could never trim the lead below double figures.
The Mavs finished the game shooting 53.4 percent from the field to USD's 38.9 and won the battle of the boards, 40-34.
Josh Mueller's 24 points led USD< while Turner Trofholz added 19.
UNO's next action will be Jan. 27 at St. Cloud State.
