Mavs Race Past RedHawks, 5-2

The UNO hockey team ended its six-game winless streak at Goggin Ice Arena with a 5-2 win over Miami on Friday night.
Bill Thomas scored two goals to lead the offensive attack and Chris Holt made 27 stops to extend UNO's CCHA unbeaten streak to six games (5-0-1).
Miami opened up the scoring with a 5-on-3 goal from Marty Guerin at 5:24 of the first period. UNO tied the score at 1-1 at the 7:58 mark on a David Phillips goal. Phillips knocked home his seventh goal of the season from the slot with helpers from Brandon Scero and Bryan Marshall.
The Mavericks took a 2-1 lead after the first intermission when Bill Thomas scored on a breakaway 49 seconds into the period. Thomas grabbed a turnover in the neutral zone and raced down the left wing, put on a nifty move and beat RedHawk goaltender Brandon Crawford-West between the legs. Dan Hacker made it a 3-1 game when he tallied a shorthanded goal at the 8:43 mark. Hacker took a cross ice pass from Alex Nikiforuk in the Maverick zone and Hacker buried a backhand shot for his sixth career shorthanded tally.
Miami tried to climb back into the game in the final period with a power play goal from Charley Fetzer just two minutes into the period. But UNO responded and got a lift Scott Parse and Bill Thomas. Parse redirected a Joe Grimaldi shot on the power play at the 4:10 mark for his 12th goal of the year. Thomas, the nation's leading scorer among freshmen, then made the score 5-2 with 11 minutes remaining in the contest when he took a great feed from Parse on the right wing and snuggled his way into the crease to beat Crawford-West for his second of the night.
The Mavs (12-9-2, 10-7-2 CCHA) are unbeaten in their last three road games for the first time since January 2002 when they went 2-0-1 against Northern Michigan and Notre Dame.
