No. 20 Mavericks Head to St. Cloud State

Coach Kevin McKenna's Mavericks, ranked No. 20 in the latest NABC poll, will square off against St. Cloud State in a key North Central Conference game Thursday. Tip-off at Halenbeck Hall in St. Cloud, Minn., is at 8 p.m., with the broadcast schedule on KOZN, 1620 AM.
The Records
The Mavericks are 16-3 on the season and are tied for third in the North Central Conference with a 2-2 mark. St. Cloud State is 14-4 on the season and 2-2 in the NCC.
The Coach
Kevin McKenna is in his fourth season as the head coach of the Mavericks, with a record of 82-30. He has guided the Mavs to three-straight 20-win seasons, one North Central Conference title and two appearances in the NCAA II tournament. McKenna is a 1993 graduate of Creighton. He was named the NCC's coach of the year last season.

The Mavs were North Central Conference regular season and post-season tournament champions in 2003-04. The title was the third all-time for UNO and the first since 1984. The first league championship was in 1979. UNO was 10-4 last year in regular season play and is 33-19 under Kevin McKenna.
Looking Back
The Mavericks came out hot, shoting 59 percent the first half, to build a big lead, then held rode out an 87-76 win at South Dakota in their only game last week. Junior guard Calvin Kapels led five Mavs in double figures as they rolled up their highest point total of the season while snapping a two-game losing skid. Kapels scored 20 points and added five rebounds, while Quantel Murphy contributed 15, Levy Jones 14, Randy Bland 12 and Abdul Mills 11. UNO led by 47-31 at halftime and increased that to as many as 27 points midway through the second half before the Coyotes staged a comeback to pull as close as 11.

The Mavericks return home to host South Dakota on Thursday, Feb. 3 at Lee & Helene Sapp Fieldhouse at 8 p.m. UNO will then play at Augustana on Saturday, Feb. 5.
