Mavericks Finish Strong to Down Vikes

Lindsey Petersen's three-pointer from the left side with 1:23 left capped a closing rally in which the Mavericks scored the final 10 points for a 58-57 win over No. 20 Augustana Thursday night at Lee & Helene Sapp Fieldhouse in the North Central Conference opener for both teams.
The teams traded the lead 14 times in the game before Augustana pulled away to outscore UNO 14-2 and take a 53-41 lead with 8:21 to play. The Vikings still held a 57-48 advantage with 3:57 to play.
Maverick forward JJ Smith hit a pair of free shots before Petersen knocked down a three with 3:13 to play to narrow the gap to just four, 57-53. Smith went inside to score on a layup with 2:11 left to bring the Mavs within 57-55 before Petersen's third three-pointer of the second half went down.
The Vikings had a chance to win or tie with 1.8 seconds left, but senior Katie Krauth missed a pair of free throws after being fouled in the lane by Smith.
Petersen led UNO with 19 points and five rebounds, while Smith contributed 17 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. The Mavs improved to 11-5 on the season while ending a 15-game NCC losing string dating back to 2003.
The Vikings, now 15-2, were led by Krauth with 15 points and Lindsey Fischbach with 14 points and six rebounds.
UNO led by as many as seven points early in the contest before The Vikings answered with an 8-1 run to claim a 16-15 lead midway through the first half. Augustana then went up by 26-21 before the Mavs scored seven straight points. Augustana took a 34-32 lead into the break.
The Mavericks will face another ranked opponent Saturday night when they host No. 8 North Dakota at Sapp Fieldhouse at 6.
