Mavericks Notch 12th Straight Win

Junior guard Calvin Kapels' triple double helped the No.5 ranked Mavericks shake off a slow start and win their 12th straight game, 83-65, over Augustana in the North Central Conference opener for both teams Thursday night.
Kapels had 10 assists, 13 rebounds and 15 points to help raise UNO's record to 15-1. The Vikings fell to 7-9 with the loss in front of 1,500 fans at Lee & Helene Sapp Fieldhouse.
The Vikings jumped out front in the first half, controlling the boards, 19-5, and the scoreboard, 29-22, with 6:40 to play. The Mavericks recovered, scored eight straight points and finished the half with a 16-4 run to take a 38-33 lead at the break.
UNO held Augustana to just eight points over a 12-minute span to pull ahead 49-37 over five minutes into the second half and were never threatened again. The Mavs finished the game with a 42-38 rebounding edge and outshot Augustana, 46.2 percent to 41.4 percent.
Kapels' totals included career highs in assists and rebounds. He also finished the game with five steals while playing just 28 minutes. He had 10 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists the second half.
Randy Bland led the Mavericks with 16 points, Andre Tarpley added 13 and Abdul Mills 11.
Tom VerDouw led the Vikings with 15 points, James Borom added 14 and Nick Olson had 13 points and seven rebounds.
UNO's next action will come Saturday night when the Mavs host North Dakota at Sapp Fieldhouse at 8.
