Mavs Power Past Manitoba, 7-0

The Nebraska-Omaha hockey team opened up the 2005-2006 season with a 7-0 exhibition win over the University of Manitoba on Monday night in front of 2,919 fans at the Qwest Center.
Six different Mavericks scored goals on the night. Alex Nikiforuk had two goals and added an assist to lead the offense.
UNO jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first period on goals by Adam Bartholomay, Phil Angell and Nikiforuk. Bartholomay opened up scoring with a power play goal at the 7:06 mark on a shot from the right point. Angell notched another power play goal at the 13:02 mark from the slot. Nikiforuk tacked on the final goal of the period at 15:54.
Juha Uotila extended UNO's lead to 4-0 with a power play tally in the final minute of the second stanza on a slap shot from the blue line.
The Mavericks then started the third period by blowing the game wide open with goals by Tomas Klempa 24 seconds into the period and Nikiforuk's second goal of the evening at 4:18 to make the score 6-0. Bryan Marshall ended the scoring with a rebound goal at 13:48.
All three goalies played for Nebraska-Omaha and combined for the shutout. Eric Aarnio started the game and recorded seven saves. Jerad Kaufmann had eight saves while Greg Barrett had five stops.
Nebraska-Omaha converted on 5-of-11 power plays and killed off all four Manitoba power plays.
UNO outshot Manitoba 48-20.
The Mavericks open the regular season with the Mutual of Omaha Stampede on Friday. New Hampshire and Ferris State will play at 5:00 p.m. with UNO and Army following at 8:00 p.m.
