Nikiforuk Lifts Mavs Past Army, 3-2

Junior forward Alex Nikiforuk recorded his first career hat trick as Nebraska-Omaha defeated Army 3-2 Friday night in the first round of the Mutual of Omaha Stampede.
Army drew first blood at the 7:28 mark of the first period on a goal by Bryce Hollweg. Nikiforuk knotted the score at 1-1 on a hard slapshot from inside the left circle at 15:29 of the opening period.
The Mavericks grabbed a 2-1 lead at the 10:59 mark of the second stanza after Nikiforuk flipped a nifty backhand shot past Army goaltender Brad Roberts. The Black Knights roared back just minutes later to tie the score on a Brady Dolim goal at 12:55 of the period.
Nikiforuk then entered the school record books 56 seconds into the final period when he recorded the fifth hat trick in program history on a rebound goal, giving the Mavs the lead for good.
Junior Scott Parse assisted on all three of Nikiforuk's goals.
Nebraska-Omaha outshot the Black Knights 40-15 for the game. Army's Brad Roberts had 37 saves in the losing effort.
UNO was 2-for-8 on the power play while Army went 1-for-6.
The victory sends UNO to Saturday's 8:00 p.m. Championship game against No. 8 New Hampshire, a 4-2 winner over Ferris State on Friday.
