Mavs Capture Mutual of Omaha Stampede Title

The Nebraska-Omaha hockey team captured the 2005 Mutual of Omaha Stampede Championship with a 5-3 victory over No. 8 New Hampshire on Saturday night at the Qwest Center.
The Mavs broke out to an early 1-0 lead when junior Alex Nikiforuk scored 15 seconds after the opening faceoff on a one-timer just outside of the crease. Freshman Tomas Klempa then followed with a power play tally, his first of two goals on the night, at the 4:39 mark of the period to make the score 2-0.
New Hampshire cut the Maverick lead to 2-1 at 12:13 of the opening period on a goal by Josh Ciocco but UNO responded five minutes later on a goal from junior Mick Lawrence for a 3-1 first period lead.
The Wildcats tied the game at 3-3 in the second stanza on goals by Jacob Micflikier and Matt Fornataro halfway through the period but UNO regained the lead on a pretty wrist shot by Dan Charleston at the 11:57 mark.
UNO freshman goaltender Greg Barrett stood his ground during his first collegiate start, collecting 35 saves. Barrett shut the door on the Wildcats with some key saves late in the third period.
Klempa sealed the victory with an empty net goal in the final seconds.
Barrett, Nikiforuk and Juha Uotila were named to the all-tournament team.
Nebraska-Omaha (2-0-0, 0-0-0 CCHA) won its second consecutive Stampede title and will open CCHA play next weekend when they play host to Miami (Ohio).
