UNO Upsets Second-Ranked Minnesota Duluth

OMAHA, Neb. -- The University of Nebraska at Omaha used a season-high 20 total team blocks to power its way past second-ranked Minnesota Duluth 3-0 (32-30, 30-27, 30-28) in North Central Conference volleyball action Friday night before a season-high 732 fans at the Sapp Fieldhouse. The Mavericks snapped UMD's 17-match winning streak with the victory.
The win over the Bulldogs marked the second time this season that Nebraska-Omaha has beaten a top-five opponent, as UNO upset then fourth-ranked Concordia St. Paul in four games on Sept. 9.
UNO improved to 15-5 overall and gained a half-match lead in the NCC standings with a 6-1 league mark. Minnesota Duluth fell to 18-3 and 5-1 in the NCC.
Sophomore middle blocker Carlie Christensen led the Mavericks with 10 kills and a career-high nine blocks. Senior outside hitter Ashley Freeman added a match-high 11 kills and five blocks. Senior middle blocker Briana Ritter collected seven kills on .353 hitting, while also adding nine blocks.
The Mavericks held UMD to their lowest hitting percentage (.060) since Aug. 26, in the Bulldogs' loss to Cal State San Bernardino.
Defensively, the Mavericks were led by junior outside hitter Christina Reicks, who registered a team-high 13 digs. Reicks also added eight kills and four blocks.
Senior setter Christie Johnson had a solid match with 37 assists, six digs, five blocks, and six kills on .500 hitting, with no errors in 12 attempts.
Nebraska-Omaha will be back in action on Saturday night, Oct. 22, when they travel to Sioux Falls, S.D., to take on Augustana beginning at 7 p.m.
