RedHawks Knock Off Mavs, 6-3

Miami defenseman Andy Greene recorded two goals and added two assists as the RedHawks defeated Nebraska-Omaha 6-3 in the CCHA opener for both teams Friday night in front of 4,225 fans at the Qwest Center.
The Mavericks broke out to an early 1-0 lead in the first period when Mick Lawrence scored the first of his two goals on the night at the 18:30 mark on a delayed penalty.
UNO held the 1-0 lead until 8:21 of the second period when Chris Michael knotted the score on a one-timer from the right circle. Greene then gave the RedHawks the lead for good when he netted the first of his two goals with three minutes remaining in the period.
Miami extended its lead to 4-1 in a two-minute span early in the final period with a power play goal from Marty Guerin and an even strength goal from Greene.
UNO staged a comeback when Lawrence scored on the power play at the 10:37 mark to cut the deficit to two goals. Miami's Nino Musitelli was called for a five-minute checking from behind major penalty and a 10-minute game misconduct at the 11:38 mark, putting UNO on a five-minute power play.
The Mavs' Bill Thomas scored his first goal of the year with 3:13 left on the power play to make the score 4-3 but Miami goaltender Charlie Effinger stood his ground and yielded the rest of UNO's chances during the man-advantage opportunity.
Miami's Ryan Jones took advantage of a UNO turnover with 2:04 remaining in the game to give the RedHawks a 5-3 lead. Chris Michael then iced the game on an emtpy netter with less than a minute to play.
The Mavericks outshot Miami, 31-21 in the contest.
UNO and Miami will close out the series on Saturday night with a 7:05 faceoff at the Qwest Center.
