Mavericks Sign 4 to National Letters of Intent

University of Nebraska at Omaha head coach Patty Patton Shearer said today that four high school players have signed national letters of intent to attend UNO and play basketball next fall. The quartet of recruits includes two from Nebraska, one from Illinois and one from Indiana.
Ashley Nelson, 6-4, center, Lincoln, Neb., Southwest High School
Earned first-team all-city and all-state honorable mention as a junior last season under coach Lis Brenden...averaged 13.5 points, 8 rebounds and 2.6 blocked shots per game as team recorded an 18-6 record and advanced to the state Class A tournament...a three-year scholar athlete award winner and a member of the school's honor roll for three years...daughter of Layne and Cheri Nelson.
Patton Shearer on Nelson: Ashley has great upside. She is a very agile post player with great feet and hands and has had some fantastic experiences already in her high school career. We know that she will have great success this year on a very good team. We are very excited about Ashley's future here at UNO.
Tara Abbott, 5-7, guard, Ashland, Neb., Ashland-Greenwood High School
Named to the first-team all-conference and all-state teams and was a third-team all-class, all-state selection at Ashland-Greenwood High School under coach Amy Scheil...averaged 15.7 points, 5.4 assists and 4.6 rebounds per game while leading team to the state tournament and a 22-2 record...member of National Honor Society...daughter of Darold and Tammy Abbott.
Patton Shearer on Abbott: Tara has superb instinct with the ball. She really has great vision and makes some of the best decisions in transition and in traffic that I've seen. She can run a team with great timing and tempo and will definitely look to do so this year as they contend for an extremely successful year. We're excited to have her as a Maverick.
Jill Wolf, 6-2, forward, Okawville, Ill., High School
Earned second-team all-state honors while leading the team in rebounding and field goal percentage...team finished 21-9after advancing to the regional championship game under coach Kathy Lantern...averaged 14.8 points, 7.6 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game...named to Who's Who Among American Students...daughter of Brenda Wolf.
Patton Shearer on Wolf: Jill is extremely agile and mobile for her size with really good hands. She can really be a weapon in transition and we will look for her to run the floor aggressively. Jill comes from a very successful high school program and we are very excited to have her as part of our Maverick family.
Katie Kane, 6-1, forward, Highland, Ind., High School
Averaged 14 points, 6 rebounds and 1.9 blocked shots at Highland High School under coach Mike Urban...team tied for first in the conference with a 19-4 mark...earned second-team all-area and is a 2005-06 pre-season all-area first-team pick...vice president of the student council, member of the National Society of High School Scholars and on the honor roll...daughter of Dave and Diane Kane...brother, Nick, is a senior member of the basketball team at Franklin College.
Patton Shearer on Kane: Katie is a great athlete and will be a tremendous defender who loves to compete. Katie will be an extremely versatile player for us and well will forward to her being able to impact multiple phases of the game. We anticipate her having a great senior season under coach Urban and are excited to have her coming to UNO.
