Rockhurst Rallies to Edge Mavs

Alisha Cade's layup with 45 seconds left gave Rockhurst the lead and a pair of free throws in the closing seconds helped the Hawks cap a second-half comeback for a 67-64 win over the Mavericks Tuesday night at Sapp Fieldhouse.
UNO, led by Ashley Freerksen's 19 points and JJ Smith's 18 points and 10 rebounds, fell to 2-2 on the year. It was Rockhurst's season-opener.
Rockhurst jumped out front early, scoring the first seven points, but UNO took control to claim a 37-30 halftime lead. The Mavs extended the lead to 39-30 in the second half and held a 53-47 edge midway through the half.
The Hawks took their first lead of the second half with a 9-5 run, with five coming from Julie Cook.
UNO used a three-pointer by Karen Thies, a pair of free shots by Smith and a layup by LaCheryl Prince to grab a 62-60 lead with 4:19 to play. After the Hawks' Jessica Rathman answered with a three-point shot for a 63-62 lead, Smith scored inside to give UNO a 64-63 lead with 1:06 to play.
Cade hit the go-ahead layup, was fouled, but missed the free shot, giving UNO the ball. The Mavs couldn't take advantage and Cook, then Kelly Becker each hit one of two foul shots to secure the win.
The Hawks were led by Cook with 18 points, while Courtney Farmer added 14 points and 12 rebounds and Cade 11 points and 13 rebounds.
The Mavs return to action Thursday night when they host Nebraska-Kearney at 7.
