UNO Advances to Tourney Final With 4-2 Victory

TROY, N.Y.--UNO advanced to the championship game of the 55th Annual Rensselaer/Bank of America Holiday Hockey Tournament with a 4-2 semifinal victory over Providence on Friday afternoon at Houston Field House.
Nebraska-Omaha ended a two-game losing streak by scoring a pair of goals in each of the first two periods and held off a third period push by Providence to improve to 6-6-0 on the year. UNO will play Holy Cross in the championship game on Saturday at 6:00 p.m.
The Mavs' first period goals came in a span of two minutes, courtesy of Alex Nikiforuk and Bryan Marshall. Nikiforuk opened scoring at 8:32 when his shot deflected off of a Friar skate and into the net for a 1-0 lead. Marshall struck 120 seconds later for his fourth goal of the year when he connected from the top of the crease after receiving a pretty exchange of passes from Bill Thomas and Scott Parse.
"We came out of the shoot real well" UNO head coach Mike Kemp said. "We had some tremendous chances early and I think our guys fed off of that."
Dan Charlston extended the Maverick lead to 3-0 early in the second period when he scored on a slapshot from the right circle. Adam Bartholomay made the score 4-0 on the power play after he scored his first career goal as a Mav at 16:58.
Providence fought its way back into the game in the third period when Nate Meyers scored at 18:18, followed by a Dinos Stamoulis tally with 7:13 remaining to make it a two-goal game.
"They changed goalies to start the third and I think that gave them a spark because their guys were pretty charged up," Kemp said. "But I thought we responded well after it became a two-goal game."
The Friars (6-5-1, 6-2-1 Hockey East) will play in the consolation game on Saturday.
UNO's Scott Parse extended his school record point streak to 12 games with two helpers, giving him 21 points on the year.
Maverick goaltender Jerad Kaufmann earned his third victory of the season, stopping 37 shots.
"Jerad was very, very sound and held them scoreless for two periods," said Kemp. "He covered the puck up and did not allow very many second chances."
