Hot Mavericks Down Iowa Wesleyan

Six players scored in double figures and the Mavericks shot 55.7 percent from the field to race to a 97-62 win over Iowa Wesleyan Friday night in the first game of the Hampton Inn Thanksgiving Classic at Lee & Helene Sapp Fieldhouse.
UNO will face Grand View Saturday at 6 p.m. in the second game of the tournament. Iowa Wesleyan will play Northern State at 2 p.m.
Junior guard Karen Thies scored 18 points, pulled down nine rebounds and handed out eight assists as UNO won its third straight game to run its record to 5-2. The Tigers fell to 4-3.
UNO scored the first eight points of the game and built a quick 20-8 lead before the Tigers battled back to trail by just 22-17 midway through the first half. But Thies scored five points in a 9-0 run to ease the threat. IWU answered with an eight-point run, using three-pointers by Katie Rung and Katie Bartsch and pulled within 40-32 at the half.
The Mavericks, who shot 50 percent from the field the first half, came out hot in the second and shot 61.1 percent while pulling away from the Tigers. An 11-0 run midway through the half gave UNO its first 20-point lead and the Tigers could never pare it down.
After Thies, who hit seven of nine shots, including both three-point attempts, Ashley Freerksen and JJ Smith each scored 14 points, Cayla Hargrove 11 and Lacey Geitzenhauer and Toni Kinsey 10 apiece.
Amber Pence scored 15 points and Bartsch 11 to lead the Tigers, who shot 37.5 percent for the game.
