Mavs Knock Off Holy Cross to Win Tourney

TROY, N.Y.-The Nebraska-Omaha hockey team won the 55th Annual Rensselaer/Bank of America Holiday Hockey Tournament title with a 6-1 win over Holy Cross on Saturday night.
UNO has won five of its last seven games to improve to 7-6-0 on the year and captured its second tournament title of the season. The Mavs return to CCHA action next weekend and will host Ferris State on December 2 and 4.
The Mavericks held a 1-0 lead and 13-1 advantage in shots after the opening period. Dan Knapp scored at 9:44 on the power play when he fired a shot from the left point for his first goal of the year.
Nebraska-Omaha scored two more goals in the second stanza, courtesy of UNO's freshman line of Dan Charleston, Tomas Klempa and J.P. Platisha, to take a 3-1 lead. Charleston scored his sixth goal of the year at 5:41 on assists from his linemates to make the score 2-0. After Holy Cross' Pierre Napert-Frenette cut the Maverick lead in half at the 8:35 mark, Platisha gave UNO some breathing room when he beat Crusader goaltender Tony Quesada at the 15:30 mark with assists from Klempa and Charleston.
"We dominated the first period and then I thought we sagged a little in the second," head coach Mike Kemp said. "That freshman line did a great job of providing us energy when we needed it."
UNO increased its lead to 4-1 in the final period on Alex Nikiforuk's second goal of weekend, taking a cross ice pass from Brandon Scero and scoring on a backhander at 6:36.
The Mavs got two more goals in the closing minute from Adam Bartholomay and Bill Thomas. Scott Parse extended his school record point streak to 13 games when he assisted on Thomas' goal with three seconds remaining in the game.
UNO's Phil Angell, Dan Charleston, Bryan Marshall and Alex Nikiforuk were named to the all-tournament team, while Maverick goaltender Jerad Kaufmann was named the tournament's most valuable player.
Ice Chips: The UNO players arrived to the rink in a handful of cabs prior to Saturday's game after the bus assigned to the team for the weekend would not start.
