Mavericks Sign 5 Softball Recruits

University of Nebraska at Omaha head softball coach Jeanne Tostenson Scarpello announced today that she has signed five players to national letters of intent for the 2006-07 school year. Four of the new Mavs are from Omaha-area high schools and one is currently in junior college.
The recruits:
Chelsea Marie Koch, Papillion, Neb.
An outfielder, first baseman and catcher, she earned all-class, all-state honors as a junior this fall for Papillion-LaVista High School under Coach Mike Govia. She batted .400, drove in 34 runs and scored 30 runs for the Monarchs. She also played for the Omaha Quakes Red summer team for coach Mike Butera. A team captain at Papillion-LaVista, she was a second-team all-state pick in 2003 and earned honorable mention in 2004. Koch, the daughter of Brian and Cindy Koch, plans to major in criminal justice at UNO. She has been a four-year member of the honor roll through high school.
Melissa Negrete, Omaha
A two-time all-Class A pitcher at Millard South High School, she won 28 games as a senior and 53 during her career under coach Steve Kerkman and helped lead the team to the 2005 state title. As a senior this fall, she was named to the all-Nebraska high school team by the Lincoln Journal and the Omaha World-Herald and was the honorary captain. She also was a second-team all-class, all-state pick as a junior and earned honorable mention as a sophomore. She was 28-4 as a senior with an 0.54 earned run averaged, recording 17 shutouts and recorded 263 strikeouts in 221 innings with just 20 walks. She set six season and career records at Millard South, including wins in a season (28), career (53), strikeouts in a season (263) and career (524), shutouts in a season (17) and a career (28). The daughter of Mark and Denni Negrete, she has been a member of the honor roll each year in high school and plans to major in management information systems.
Chanel Reaves, Lancaster, Calif.
A first-team all-region outfielder after her freshman season at Iowa Western Community College, she batted .466 and stole 40 bases. She is a graduate of Quartz Hill High School in Lancaster, Calif.
Lindsey Slocum, Omaha
A first-team all-Class A pitcher-outfielder, she batted .400 and recorded a 0.65 earned run average while leading Class A with 311 strikeouts as a senior at Omaha's Marian High School under coach Al Leaders. She also earned second-team all-class, all-state honors and was a first-team all-conference selection. She is the duaghter of Sue and Frank Slocum.
Kristin Wellwood, Omaha
She earned all-Class A and second-team all-state honors at Millard South High School while batting .376 her senior season, helping lead the team to the state championship under coach Steve Kerkman. The versatile infielder can play third base, second base and shortstop and recorded a career .316 batting average and set a school record with 12 doubles in a season. She played summer ball for the Omaha Quakes and coach Mike Butera. The daughter of Tom and Jeanne Wellwood, Kristin plans to major in biology at UNO. She is a three-year member of the honor roll and a three-year outstanding all-around student of the year recipient and was an academic all-state selection in 2004-05.
The Mavericks won the North Central Conference title last season and advanced to the NCAA II regional tournament, finishing with a 35-23-1 record.
