Mavs Take 4-Game Win Streak into Classic

The Mavericks, riding a four-game winning streak, will host their second straight tournament this weekend in the four-team DoubleTree Classic at Lee & Helene Sapp Fieldhouse. UNO will meet Roucky Mountain Athletic Conference teams Mesa State Friday night at 7 and Adams State at 5 Saturday night.

Coaching Staff
Head Coach Patty Patton Shearer is beginning her second season as the head coach at UNO and has a 20-16 mark. Overall in five seasons in college she is 80-65 She compiled a 60-49 record over four seasons at Fort Lewis College before becoming UNO's head coach in the summer of 2004. She is a 1990 graduate of Rocky Mountain College. Her assistants, all in their second seasons at UNO as well, are Jason Flores, Brad Schick and Maurtice Ivy.
The Opponents
Mesa State will bring a 1-2 mark into Friday's game. The Mavericks are coming off a 79-58 win over Western New Mexico. Mesa State was 11-16 last season in Timi Brown's first year as the head coach. Adams State is 1-3 before meeting Minnesota State, Mankato Friday night. The Grizzlies were 10-17 last season under coach Jeff Storm. This is the first time UNO has played either school in women's basketball. Minnesota State is 3-2 entering the weekend under coach Lori Fish, who guided the Mavs to an 11-16 mark in her first season last year.
Last Week
The Mavericks posted consecutive 35-point wins last week, downing Upper Iowa on the road, 85-50 on Nov. 22 to start off the three-game week. Then, in the Hampton Inn Thanksgiving Classic at Sapp Fieldhouse, UNO defeated Iowa Wesleyan 97-62. Karen Thies led six players in double figures with 18 points, nine rebounds and eight assists. Saturday, UNO capped the week with a 74-56 win over Grand View. Thies scored 14 points and had six rebounds in the victory.

Forward JJ Smith should become the 17th member of the school's 1,000-point club this weekend. The Lincoln, Neb., senior currently has 986 points for her career and leads the team in scoring at 14.8 per game. Three of Smith's former teammates are already members of the elite group. Sara Peterson (1999-2003) is 12th at 1,105; Lindsey Petersen (2000-05) is 15th at 1,022 and Tanya Hammes (1999-2003) is 16th at 1,003.
The Mavs are outscoring opponents by an average of 14.5 points per game.
Seven of 10 Mavs who have played this year have connected at least once from three-point range.
UNO is in the middle of a six-game home stretch.
The back-to-back 35-point wins over Upper Iowa and Iowa Wesleyan marked the second-largest margins of victory by a Patty Patton Shearer team. UNO downed Peru State last season by 39 points (78-39).
The last time the Mavericks won five straight games was in 1999-2000 and the last six-game winning streak came in the 1996-97 season, when they had two such runs.
Thies Player of the Week
Karen Thies, who averaged 15 points per game last week and just missed a triple-double against Grand View, was named the Nebraska NCAA II player of the week for her performances. Thies scored 13, 18 and 14 points in the three wins. She also had 20 rebounds and 15 assists.
Looking Ahead
The Mavericks will host Peru State on Dec. 6 and York on Dec. 10. Both games tip-off at 6 p.m. as part of a women-men doubleheader. After that game, the Mavericks won't make another home appearance until hosting North Central Conference rival North Dakota on Jan. 12 at Sapp Fieldhouse.
