Falcons Fly Past Mavs, 7-3

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio--Bowling Green's Alex Foster recorded a career-high five points with a goal and four assists and teammate Jonathan Matsumoto chipped in a goal and three assists as the Falcons won the opening game of the series against Nebraska-Omaha, 7-3, at BGSU Ice Arena on Friday night.
Bowling Green (1-4-1, 1-2-1 CCHA) earned its first victory of the year and snapped a five-game winless streak. UNO lost its third-straight contest and dropped to 2-3-0 and 0-3-0 in the CCHA. The two teams will meet again in the series finale on Saturday night with the faceoff scheduled for 6:05 p.m., central time.
Bowling Green jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in a fast-paced opening period when Brandon Svendsen beat UNO goaltender Greg Barrett short side from the left circle just 79 seconds into the contest. The Falcons struck again halfway through the period when Jonathan Matsumoto scored a 5-on-3 goal off of a rebound in front of the net at 11:23.
The Mavericks' Kaleb Betts cut the Falcon deficit in half at the 15:06 mark, knocking home a rebound from the doorstep of the crease. BGSU responded four minutes later and took a 3-1 lead into the first intermission after James Unger slipped the puck past Barrett when a bad bounce of the puck found its way onto his stick with 31 seconds left in the period.
BGSU broke the game open in the second period on goals by John Mazzei at the 8:29 mark and Mike Falk at 14:10 to make the score 5-1. UNO clawed their way back into the game after Bryan Marshall scored his first goal of the season, a breakaway shorthanded tally, to bring the Mavs within 5-2 with 3:44 remaining in the period. UNO then gave up a goal with less than a minute to play for the second consecutive period when Alex Foster scored off of a scramble in front of the net to make the score 6-2.
UNO's Scott Parse extended his point streak to five games when he recorded his second goal of the year at the 10:40 mark of the final period to make the score 6-3. BG scored three minutes following Parse's goal with his second of the evening to give his team a four-goal lead.
The Mavs finished 0-10 on the power play while Bowling Green connected on 2-of-8 man-advantage opportunites.
The Falcons outshot UNO 32-28 in the contest, including a 16-7 clip in the opening period but the Mavericks came back to outshoot BGSU 21-16 in the final two periods.
