SmithaEUs 29 Points Leads Mavs to 3rd at Disney

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - Senior JJ Smith scored a career-high 29 points to lead the Mavs to a 75-67 win over Columbus State Sunday in the third-place game at the Disney Tip-Off Classic. Smith scored 52 points as the Mavs went 2-1 in the season-opening tournament. She and junior Karen Theis were named to the all-tournament team.
Junior Toni Kinsey scored 14 points and Theis chipped in with 11 as UNO and Columbus State met for the first time ever. Smith and Theis both had double-doubles with Smith leading the way with 12 rebounds and Theis totaling 10. Smith was 10 for 16 from the field and nine of 13 from the free throw line while the Mavericks shot 50 percent from the field and kept Columbus State to 39 percent shooting.
Smith's 29 points was the most she tallied since scoring 25 against Colorado Mines last year.
Nebraska-Omaha will return to action November 15 when it hosts Rockhurst at 6 p.m. in Sapp Fieldhouse.
