Mavs Open Season Friday in Florida

The Mavericks will open the 2005-06 season at the Disney Tip-Off Classic in Orlando, Fla., Friday night against Presbyterian at 7:30 CST. A win would send UNO against either Caldwell or Southern Indiana at 7:30 CST Saturday; a loss to a 3:30 game. The other teams in the tournament include Philadelphia, Columbus State, Bridgeport and Alaska-Anchorage.
UNO Falls to Huskers
Nebraska held off a second-half Maverick surge to record a 70-65 exhibition victory in Lincoln Nov. 7. Ryan Curtis and Denny Johnston each scored 12 points to lead UNO. The Mavs trailed by as many as 18 points, but closed the gap as Jamaal Byers hit three three-pointers down the stretch.
The Record & Rankings
The Mavericks won their second-straight North Central Conference title in 2004-05 and finished the season 23-6 after a first-round loss in the NCAA II tournament. UNO was ranked No. 7 in the final NABC poll of the season.
Radio
A total of 20 Maverick games will be broadcast on KOZN, 1620 AM with David Gustafson calling the action. The Disney Tip-Off Classic games will not be broadcast.
The Coach
Derrin Hansen is in his first season as a collegiate head coach. The seven-year Maverick assistant took over the program in June. He is a 1991 graduate of Nebraska Wesleyan University. He served as the head basketball and track coach at Elmwood-Murdock, Neb., High School for two years and was a graduate assistant at Nebraska-Kearney while earning his master's degree in 1995.
Game Notes...
The Mavericks will be facing Presbyterian for the first time ever in basketball, in fact, UNO has never met any of the teams in the Disney field in the past except for Alaska-Anchorage, which defeated UNO in the only meeting in 1971-72, 81-59...this is the second Disney Tip-Off Classic appearance for UNO, which also opened the 2001-02 season in Orlando. UNO went 2-1 after losing in the first round...this marks the earliest-ever start for a UNO regular season...
