Mavericks Cruise to 8th Straight Win

Hot first-half shooting and a balanced offense helped the Mavericks cruise past York College, 96-63, Saturday night at Lee & Helene Sapp Fieldhouse for their eighth straight victory. The Mavericks shot 65.5 percent from the field the first half and scored the first 19 points in the game.
Senior forward JJ Smith led four players in double figures with 16 points as UNO improved to 10-2, the second-best start in school history. Junior forward Ashley Freerksen added 15 points, junior guard Karen Thies 12 and sophomore forward Carlye Jones 11. All 10 Mavericks scored at least six points in the game.
The Mavs could do little wrong in the opening five minutes, jumping out front 19-0 and building a 33-4 lead with 11:50 left in the half. UNO led 60-27 at the break, their most productive first half of the season.
UNO cooled off the second half, shooting 35.7 percent from the floor as the teams played even. The Panthers could pull no closer than 27 the second half.
York, now 6-7, was led by senior guard Adrianna Martin's 26 points and 10 rebounds. Junior guard Joy McCullough added 14 points.
The eight-game win streak is the longest since 1991-92 and the 10-2 start is the best since 1996-97 when the Mavericks used two six-game win streaks to open the season 12-1.
The game was the last UNO home appearance until Jan. 12. The Mavericks will next be in action Dec. 17 at Southwest Minnesota State.
