Mavs Back on Road for Saturday Contest

The Mavericks will begin a string of five straight road games when they travel to Marshall, Minn., to face Southwest Minnesota State at 3 p.m. Saturday. UNO is riding an eight-game winning streak, its longest since 1991-92, and is 10-2 entering Saturday's game with the Mustangs, who are 3-5 before playing at Minnesota State, Mankato Thursday night.

The Opponent
Southwest Minnesota State is 3-5 before playing a Thursday night game at Minnesota State, Mankato. The Mustangs, coached by Mike Power, were 19-10 last season. Four of the losses have been to NCC teams North Dakota, South Dakota, St. Cloud State and Augustana. Sara Leidall leads the team in socring at 10.3 per game and Betsy Tasca leads in rebounding at 5.4. The Mustangs are scoring 62.5 p[oints per game and yielding 70.6.
The Series
This will be the fifth meeting for the two schools, with Southwest Minnesota State holding a 4-0 lead. The Mustangs won last year's game, 58-46, in the Coyote Classic in Vermillion, S.D.
Last Week
UNO coasted past Peru State Dec. 6, 84-49, as JJ Smith scored 20 points and Lacey Geitzenhauer 18. The Mavs followed that with a 96-63 win Dec. 10. Smith led with 16 points and Ashley Freerksen added 15, while Caryle Jones had nine rebounds.
Coaching Staff
Head Coach Patty Patton Shearer is beginning her second season as the head coach at UNO and has a 24-16 mark. Overall in five seasons in college she is 84-65 She compiled a 60-49 record over four seasons at Fort Lewis College before becoming UNO's head coach in the summer of 2004. She is a 1990 graduate of Rocky Mountain College. Her assistants, all in their second seasons at UNO as well, are Jason Flores, Brad Schick and Maurtice Ivy.
Looking Ahead
The Mavericks will have 12 days off before returning to the court on Dec. 29 to play Johnson and Wales in Denver, Colo., and Colorado School of Mines in Golden on Dec. 30.
