Win Streak Grows to 9 for Mavericks

MARSHALL, Minn. -- Senior JJ Smith scored 21 points and handed out six assists Saturday afternoon, helping lift the Mavericks to their ninth straight victory, 77-68, over Southwest Minnesota State.
The Mavericks, now 11-2, pulled away in the last five minutes of the first half, expanding a four-point lead to 10 on three-pointers by Toni Kinsey and Smith. Smith closed the half by hitting five straight free throws for a 39-27 lead at the break.
The Mustangs, who fell to 3-7, couldn't climb closer than eight the second half. UNO hit 13 of its 24 shots each half for 54.2 percent shooting, including 61.1 percent (11-for-18) from behind the arc.
"I was happy with our shot selection and overall with the way we played with the exception of having too many turnovers," UNO coach Patty Patton Shearer said.
The Mavericks committed 26 turnovers in the game to SMSU's 21.
Junior guard Karen Thies added 16 points and matched Smith with six rebounds, and Ashley Freerksen added 13 points. Smith hit four of five shots from behind the arc and was perfect in nine trips to the line.
Sara Leidall, who hit 10 of her 12 shots, led the Mustangs with 27 points and six rebounds. Kelly Crimi added 12 points and Megan Wittkop and Alaura Sharp 10 apiece.
The Mavericks are idle until playing Johnson and Wales in Denver, Colo., Dec. 29.
