Mavericks Speed Past Mesa State, 79-56

Junior forward Ashley Freerksen's 15 points led five players in double figures as the Mavericks cruised to a 79-56 win over Mesa State in the first round of the DoubleTree Classic at Lee & Helene Sapp Fieldhouse Friday night, extending their winning streak to five games.
UNO, now 7-2, will meet Adams State, 1-4, at 5 Saturday night in the second round. Adams State dropped its Friday game to Minnesota State, Mankato, 69-53.
The Mavericks shot 52 percent from the field and trailed only in the early minutes while pulling away to a 36-26 lead at halftime, then connected on 60 percent after the break.
Mesa State, now 1-3, closed to within 38-32 two minutes into the second half, but JJ Smith and Karen Thies each threw in three-pointers. After Mesa State answered with a field goal by Brittany Fowler and a three-pointer by Abby Hancock, Thies nailed another from behind the arc and then hit a short jumper to start a 9-0 UNO run that got the lead back into double digits.
The Mavericks held Mesa State without a field goal for just over five minutes in building the lead to 57-39 at the midway point of the half.
Thies finished with 14 points, while Smith and Toni Kinsey each added 11 and Lacey Geitzenhauer scored 10. The Mavericks finished the game shooting 56 percent from the field to 40 percent for Mesa State.
Fowler led Mesa State with 15 points, Brittany Rowley added 13 and Cassie Hutto 11.
Freerksen also had a game high eight rebounds and six assists.
