UNO Skates Past Ferris State, 5-2

OMAHA, Neb.--The UNO hockey team extended its winning streak to three games with a 5-2 victory over No. 19 Ferris State on Friday night in front of 4,356 fans at the Qwest Center.
UNO (8-6-0, 4-5-0 CCHA) raced to a 3-0 lead in the first period. Scott Parse scored his eighth goal of the season 21 seconds after the opening faceoff from below the right circle. Bryan Marshall made it a 2-0 game when he scored on the power play on a slapshot from the point at the 16:17 mark. Tomas Klempa recorded UNO's third goal of the period with just 29 ticks left in the frame after he tipped in a cross ice pass from J.P. Platisha.
The Mavs held FSU (7-4-4, 3-2-4 CCHA) scoreless until the Bulldogs' Matt Frank lit the lamp at the 3:05 mark of the final period. Zac Pearson scored six minutes later to cut the Maverick lead to 3-2 but UNO's Bill Thomas scored his ninth and 10th goals of the season in the closing minutes to end the Ferris State threat. Thomas popped a wrist shot on the power play from the left circle with 5:14 remaining in the game and struck two and a half minutes later on a nifty wrist shot from the crease.
"I thought our guys settled back down and finished strong down the stretch after giving up that second goal," UNO head coach Mike Kemp said.
Maverick goaltender Jerad Kaufmann won his fifth straight start and had 32 saves on the night. FSU starter Mitch O'Keefe was relieved after the first period by Derek MacIntyre, who finished with 21 saves.
The two teams will meet again on Sunday afternoon in the series finale at 2:00 p.m. at the Qwest Center.
