Mavs Power Past Chargers, 8-5

OMAHA, Neb.--Sophomore forward Bill Thomas and junior forward Scott Parse each tied a school record with five points a piece as UNO skated to an 8-5 victory over Alabama-Huntsville on Thursday night at the Qwest Center.
Brandon Scero gave UNO a 2-1 lead in the opening period with a pair of power play goals at 5:46 and 19:08.
Thomas, who recorded his first career hat trick, scored two of his three goals in the second period. He struck for a one-timer at 7:18 and the Chargers responded just 38 seconds later on a tally by Kevin Galerno. Thomas then buried a rebound on the power play at 11:17 to give the Mavs a 4-2 lead before UAH's Tyler Hilbert scored at 14:32 to make the score 4-3. UNO captain Mike Lefley ended the scoring in the second period with his first goal of the season at 17:21.
Nebraska-Omaha extended its lead in the third period to 7-3 on Thomas' 16th goal of the year at 3:29 and a shorthanded tally by Scott Parse at 8:01. UAH rallied with a pair of power play goals from Mike Salekin and David Nimmo to cut the lead to 8-5 with 4:04 left in regulation but UNO kept the Chargers in check for the remainder of the game.
UNO's Tomas Klempa scored an empty net goal with less than a minute to play. The eight goals tied a school record and were the most since the Mavs defeated Bemidji State, 8-2 back on February 18, 1999.
Parse finished with a goal and four assists and Bryan Marshall had a career-high four assists.
The Mavs finished 3-for-9 on the power play and outshot Alabama-Huntsville 44-38.
UNO (10-8-0) will face Yale on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
