Mav Streak at 6; Smith Passes 1,000

JJ Smith became the school's 17th 1,000 point scorer Saturday night and the Maverick winning streak grew to six, the longest in nine years, in a 92-47 win over Adams State in the DoubleTree Classic at Lee & Helene Sapp Fieldhouse.
Smith, a 5-11 senior forward from Lincoln, scored 16 points to move into 16th place all-time with 1,013. Freshman Cayla Hargrove led UNO, now 8-2, with 17 points and seven rebounds.
The six-game winning streak is the longest for the Mavericks since the 1996-97 season. The last time UNO won as many as seven in a row in a single season was in 1991-92.
The Mavericks were never seriously threatened, pulling away from a 6-6 tie with 12 straight points in a 15-2 run over the next eight minutes. UNO shot 50 percent from the field in taking a 45-20 lead at the break.
Adams State, now 1-5, suffered from the loss of top scorer Isil Ozkan, who scored 16 first half points before turning an ankle early in the second half. UNO outscored the Grizzlies 27-4 over the first eight minutes after the break to put the game under wraps.
Smith scored five points in the first half to move past the 1,000-mark and added 11 in the second. She hit on 7 of 10 shots for the game and pulled down four rebounds.
UNO's other double figure scorers included Karen Thies and Carlye Jones with 11 and Ashley Freerksen with 10.
UNO will return to action Tuesday night, hosting Peru State at 6 p.m. at Sapp Fieldhouse.
In the first game Saturday, Minnesota State, Mankato breezed past Mesa State, 86-56 behind Arin Andrews' 20 points and 12 rebounds.
