Colorado Mines Ends Mav Streak

GOLDEN, Colo. -- Colorado Mines held the Mavericks to one field goal over a nine-minute stretch in the second half to end UNO's 10-game winning streak with a 53-48 victory Friday afternoon.
The Mavericks, who were led by JJ Smith's 14 points, fell to 12-3 while Iva Tomava's 26 points helped Mines improve to 7-4.
UNO battled to a 23-22 halftime lead and hit 6 of its first 12 shots after the break to take its biggest lead, 40-33, with 9:30 left in the game.
Tomava connected on four straight free throws and Angela Pearson on a jumper over the next threee minutes to chop the margin down to a point. Smith then scored inside for a 42-39 UNO lead to temporarily regain the momentum.
Pearson, Tomava, then Pearson again hit shots to give Mines a 46-42 lead with 3:06 left in the game, while UNO went stone-cold, missing six straight shots. Smith ended the scoring drought with a pair of free throws with 2:06 left, bringing UNO within a pair.
UNO's shooting woes continued, however, and Tomava gave Mines a commanding lead at 51-44 with 25 seconds left when she hit three of four from the line. The Maverick cold-stretch ended when Toni Kinsey hit a jumper with 18 seconds left.
The Mavericks finished the game shooting 30.9 percent from the field to Mines' 40.9 percent.
Kinsey added nine points, Lacey Geitzenhauer 7 and Karen Thies 6 to go with a game-high 9 rebounds. Smith moved into 13th place in UNO career scoring with 1,104 points.
The 10-game winning streak tied a school record set in 1981-82.
The Mavericks' next action will come when they open North Central Conference play with a road swing to Augustana on Jan. 5 and to North Dakota on Jan. 7.
