Mavs Fall to St. Cloud State, 78-72

St. Cloud State came from behind in the closing minutes to post a 78-72 North Central Conference victory over the Mavericks Friday night at Lee & Helene Sapp Fieldhouse. The loss was just the second this season at home for UNO.
The Mavericks, now 14-9 overall and 4-4 in the NCC, will host Minnesota State, Mankato Saturday night at 6. St. Cloud State improved to 17-7 overall and 4-5 in the NCC.
The Mavs, who trailed 35-34 at halftime, took control in the early stages of the second half and used baskets by Andrea Schoepf, JJ Smith and Lindsey Petersen to take a 57-54 lead with nine minutes to play.
Smith, who led UNO with 21 points, hit a short jumper with 6:15 left to give UNO a 61-57 lead, but the Huskies responded with an 11-2 run, with Erika Quigley scoring seven points, to take a 68-63 lead with 3:31 to play.
The Mavericks couldn't draw closer than four points thereafter and Sascha Hansen secured the win, the second this season by SCSU over UNO, with a pair of free throws with six seconds remaining.
Quigley led St. Cloud State with 24 points and 17 rebounds, while Shannon Francis added 14 points and Hansen 13.
Petersen added 16 points and seven rebounds for the Mavericks, who are now 11-2 this season at Sapp Fieldhouse.
