UNO Comeback Falls Short, 78-67

Minnesota State, Mankato raced to an early lead that proved to be too big of a hurdle for the Mavericks to overcome Saturday night as UNO suffered a 78-67 North Central Conference loss to MSU in front of 1,250 at Lee & Helene Sapp Fieldhouse.
MSU scored the first eight points in the game and led by as many as 14 points in the first five minutes of the game. UNO sliced the margin to five with an 11-2 run in which Karen Thies hit all three of her three-pointers in the game in a span of just 1:41.
Minnesota State squelched the rally, scoring five straight points in a 9-2 run minutes later en route to a 40-31 lead at the half.
UNO made another run in the second half, pulling within a point several times before finally tying the game at 58 on Chelsie Groslie's layup on a pass from Thies on the break at the 8:24 mark. UNO fell bheind on two free shots by Arin Andrews, then tied the game a second time at 60 with 6:21 left on a layup by JJ Smith.
Andrews and Hannah Stolba then hit field goals and UNO never again pulled within a basket. MSU put the game out of reach by making seven of eight free throws in the final 71 seconds.
Andrews led MSU with 2 points and 10 rebounds. Heather Peterson added 14 points and Alanna Wahl 12.
UNO, in losing its third straight game, fell to 14-10 overall and 4-5 in the NCC, while MSU improved to 9-13 and 3-6. The teams will meet again to close the regular season Feb. 26 in Mankato.
