Third Period Sparks Mavs in Victory

SAULT STE. MARIE, MICH.-Maverick freshmen Mick Lawrence and Bill Thomas scored twice and sophomore Scott Parse had four assists as Nebraska-Omaha downed Lake Superior State, 5-2, Friday at Abel Arena.
The victory improves the Mavericks' record to 16-12-3 on the year and 12-10-3 in the CCHA. Nebraska-Omaha and Lake Superior State will close out the two-game series at 6:05 p.m.
The two teams traded goals in a fast paced first period. Lake Superior opened scoring at the 4:49 mark when Alex Dunn tapped home a rebound for a 1-0 lead. UNO's Mick Lawrence evened the score at 14:28 of the first when he knocked home a one-timer from in the crease.
Bill Thomas gave UNO its first lead of the night at 2-1 when he buried his own rebound on the power play with 14:42 remaining in the second period. The Lakers then responded with a goal from Trent Campbell to tie the score at 2-2 when he deflected a shot with his stick past UNO goaltender Chris Holt at 10:12 of the period.
UNO took control of the third period in the final 10 minutes with three goals in a span of six minutes. Mick Lawrence popped his second power play goal of the night at the 10:03 mark for a 3-2 lead. Thomas gave the Mavs a two-goal cushion when he scored during a 4-on-4 situation for his 16th tally of the season at the 15:51 mark. Alex Nikiforuk struck just 31 seconds later on a breakaway to put the finishing touches on the Lakers.
The Mavericks connected on 3-of-7 power plays while killing off all eight LSSU power play chances. Nebraska-Omaha outshot the Lakers 38-28, including an 18-3 advantage in the final period.
