Third Period Dooms Mavericks

Omaha,Neb.--The University of Alaska-Fairbanks scored four third period goals to break away from a 2-2 tie to defeat the University of Nebraska-Omaha 6-4 in front of 7,154 fans at Qwest Center Omaha.
The Nanooks scored three goals in the first ten minutes of the third period before the Mavericks could respond. Jared Sylvestre had two of those goals and added an assist on the night.
UNO would claw back to 5-4 on a redirected shot by Brent Kisio and a shorthanded goal by Alex Nikiforuk with 3:31 to play. But the Nanooks would put the game away on a power play goal by Lucas Burnett less than a minute later.
UNO (16-13-4, 12-11-4 CCHA) finished 1-4 on the power play and was outshot 34-33 by Alaska-Fairbanks (12-14-3, 11-13-3 CCHA).
One bright note on the evening was the news that the Mavericks will host a first round CCHA playoff series. Bowling Green defeated Michigan State 2-1, securing UNO a top six finish in the CCHA.
UNO and Alaska-Fairbanks will meet again Saturday night in a 7:05 game at Qwest Center Omaha.
