Minnesota State Pulls Away for 78-70 Win

MANKATO, MINN. -- Minnesota State pulled away from the UNO Mavericks in the closing minutes to claim a 78-70 North Central Conference victory to finish fifth in the final regular season standings, while dropping UNO to sixth place.
The Mavericks (14-13, 4-8) will now play at Augustana in the first round of the NCC's Wells Fargo Finals.
Senior forward Lindsey Petersen's 21 points, putting her at 998 for her career, led the Mavericks. JJ Smith added 15 points and a game-high nine rebounds.
MSU scored the final seven points of the game from the free throw line in the last 66 seconds after UNO pulled within a point, 71-70, on senior Chelsie Groslie's three-pointer with 1:16 to play.
UNO, after losing six-point lead midway through the first half, recovered and took a 30-25 lead with 4:15 left on two-point and three-point field goals by Petersen. The Mavs built the margin up to 39-32 with 26 seconds left on a three-pointer by Andrea Schoepf.
MSU sliced the lead to a single point, 39-38, as Jamie Kienitz nailed a three-pointer with eight seconds left. After a UNO turnover, MSU's Stacie Johnson gunned a long three just before the buzzer.
UNO regained the momentum, however, leading by as many as seven points in the opening minutes of the second half. MSU used a 10-0 run to take a 54-50 lead with 12 minutes left.
The Mavericks led twice more and tied the game at 67 on Smith's short jumper with 2:50 to play, but managed just one more field goal the rest of the way, which was Groslie's three.
Johnson, with 17 points, and Kienitz, with 16, led Minnesota State, which is now 11-15 overall and 5-7 in the NCC.
