Smith & Jones Boost Mavs' Win

JJ Smith scored 23 points and Carlye Jones grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds Thursday night to help the Mavericks defeat South Dakota 61-48 and move into third place in the North Central Conference in front of 1,100 fans at Lee & Helene Sapp Fieldhouse and a state-wide television audience.
UNO, now 4-2 in the conference, improved to 14-7 overall in winning for the second time this year over the Coyotes. South Dakota fell to 13-8 and 1-5.
The Mavericks survived a cold-shooting first half to lead an even colder-shooting USD 22-18 at the break. The Mavs shots just 27.8 percent from the floor the first half, but the Coyotes were held to 22.6 percent. Jones grabbed 12 rebounds in the opening period.
UNO led all the way, jumping out front 8-1 as Smith contributed a pair of layups. The Mavs built the lead to as many as 10, 22-12, before the Coyotes scored the final six points of the half.
UNO pulled away from South Dakota in the opening seven minutes of the second half as Smith scored nine points in a 19-6 run that put UNO into a comfortable 41-24 lead with 13 minutes left in the game.
The Mavs finished shooting 51.9 percent after halftime for a 38.1 mark for the game while improving their Sapp Fieldhouse record to 10-1.
Smith was 10-for-20 from the field and also grabbed seven rebounds. Chelsie Groslie tied her career-best with 14 points, hitting four of seven three-point tries and Lindsey Petersen added 10 points.
USD was led by Meghan Woster with 10 points. The Coyotes, the top three-point shooting team in NCAA II entering the game, missed all 12 of their three-point attempts the first half and finished hitting just three of 23 attempts. Overall, USD improved its shooting eye after the break, hitting 36.7 percent for the period and 29.5 percent for the game. Jenni Flynn added seven points and a team-high nine rebounds.
The Mavericks will return to action at Augustana Saturday night at 6 in Sioux Falls, S.D.
