Mav Rally Falls Short of Vikings, 73-69

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- Augustana hit eight straight free throws in the final 2:12 to spoil a second-half rally by the Mavericks and post a 73-69 North Central Conference victory at the Elmen Center Saturday night.
Karen Thies scored 22 of her game-high 27 points the second half as the Mavericks battled from 17 points down with 10 minutes left to tie the game at 62 with 3:55 to play.
JJ Smith, who finished with 16 points, hit a pair of three-pointers to help trim the margin to 62-51 with seven minutes left. UNO then scored 11 straight points in just over three minutes to tie the game on Leslie Ross' layup.
Augustana's Andrea Seefeldt gave the Vikings the lead with six straight free throws over a 35-second span to snuff the rally. Seefeldt then answered a pair of free throws by Smith with a three-pointer with 1:03 to play for a 71-64 lead.
Smith knocked down a three with 47 seconds left, but Augustana's Alison Adamson converted two free throws with a second to play. Chelsie Groslie managed a layup at the buzzer for the final margin.
The loss dropped the Mavericks to 14-8 on the season and 4-3 in the NCC. Augustana, in winning its 18th straight home game, improved to 20-5 and 5-3.
Katie Krauth led the Vikings with 20 points, Adamson added 16 and Seefeldt 11, nine of them in the final 2:12.
UNO's next action will be Friday night when the Mavs host St. Cloud State at Sapp Fieldhouse at 6.
