Lawrence Comes Up Big in 6-3 Win

SOUTH BEND, IND.-Freshman forward Mick Lawrence scored two goals and added two assists to lift Nebraska-Omaha to a 6-3 win over Notre Dame at the Joyce Center Saturday night.
The Maverick hockey team used a flurry of goals in the final minutes of the third period to improve their record to 15-10-3, 11-8-3 CCHA.
The Mavericks struck early in the first period on a power play goal by Lawrence. Bryan Marshall let a rocket go from the point and the rebound bounced Lawrence's way in the left circle and he popped it past goaltender Morgan Cey at the 17:30 mark.
Mike Walsh evened the score at 1-1 for Notre Dame at 5:21 of the second period.
Nebraska-Omaha regained the lead when Bill Thomas knocked home his 14th goal of the season during a 4-on-3 situation at 11:51 of the second stanza. Bryan Marshall set up his second goal of the evening when he found Thomas in the left circle. Thomas wristed one by Cey off his shoulder and into the net for a 2-1 lead. Notre Dame once again evened the score when Cory McLean scored with 54 seconds remaining in the second period.
Scott Parse scored the first of four Mav goals in the final period when he gave UNO a 3-2 lead with 6:57 left on a give-and-go from Alex Nikiforuk. Captain Mike Lefley made it 4-2 just 22 seconds later when he tallied his fourth goal of the season off a nice pass from Lawrence in the right circle for a 4-2 lead.
Notre Dame made it a one-goal game with 4:30 remaining after Tony Gill went to dump the puck into the Irish zone and it bounced off one of the glass supports along the boards and took a funny hop right past UNO goaltender Chris Holt.
Dan Hacker and Mick Lawrence then scored insurance goals for UNO in the final 1:18 as Notre Dame tried to mount another comeback.
The Mavericks were 2-for-8 on the power play, while Notre Dame finished 0-for-4.
