Mavs Fall to Vikings in Overtime

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- No. 23 ranked Augustana converted 45 of 53 free throws in the game and held off UNO's late comeback to post a 101-95 overtime win over the Mavericks in the North Central Conference Wells Fargo Finals first round.
Senior forward Lindsey Petersen, one of four Mavs to foul out in the game, scored 24 points and became the 16th player in UNO history to score 1,000 points, finishing her career with 1,022.
Augustana, now 22-8, will play South Dakota in the tournament semifinals Friday in Grand Forks, N.D. The loss ends Coach Patty Patton Shearer's first Maverick season at 14-14.
UNO trailed by 13-2 to start the game, was as many as 13 points back and trailed by 38-27 at the half before mounting a comeback. An 11-3 run that started with 15:16 to play in the second half brought UNO back within a point, 50-49, with 11:35 to play.
UNO tied the game twice, at 60 on JJ Smith's jumper and at 66 on a free throw by LaCheryl Prince. But the Vikings stifled the comeback and led 80-74 with 20 seconds left.
Andrea Schoepf hit a three-pointer to rally UNO and Prince added a three-point play on a layup and free throw with 13 seconds remaining after two free throws by Augustana's Alison Adamson to bring UNO within a pair, 82-80.
Adamson then missed one of two free throws with 12.9 seconds left. UNO rebounded and senior Chelsie Groslie drained a three-pointer from the top of the arc with 5.4 seconds left to tie the game at 83.
The Mavericks, who already had starters Petersen, Karen Thies and Smith on the bench with five fouls in the extra session, quickly lost reserve Leslie Ross as well.
The Vikings hit their first six overtime points from the foul line and then got clutch three-point shots from Katie Krauth and Andrea Seefeldt. UNO trailed by as many as six, but cut the margin in half on Groslie's three-pointer with just under a minute left, but the rally stalled and the Vikings hit six free throws in the closing half minute.
Thies added 16 points to go with five rebounds and five steals for UNO, while Groslie finished with a career-high 15 points. Smith added 14 points.
Adamson's career-high 29 points led Augustana, which set school records for free throws made and attempted.
