Winona State Upsets Mavs in Regional

DENVER, COLO. -- Winona State took advantage of the Mavericks' cold second-half shooting and scored the last six points in a tight defensive battle Saturday to post a 64-58 win in the first round of the NCAA Division II North Central Regional.
The upset by the No. 7 seeded Warriors ended No. 2 seeded UNO's season at 23-6. Winona State will advance to play South Dakota Sunday in the regional semifinals.
The Mavericks shot 48.5 percent the first half, but hit just 7 of 28 shots after halftime.
The Warriors (24-10) broke a 58-58 tie with 1:31 left on a jumnper by David Zellman and 21 seconds later went up by four on a steal and breakaway layup by Zach Malvik. Zellman sealed the win, the first in four tries all-time by Winona State over UNO, with two free throws with 42 seconds left. UNO missed three shots in the closing 48 seconds.
Winona State scored the first six points in the game and held a 15-10 lead with 12:48 left before Maverick senior Randy Bland came off the bench to turn the momentum in UNO's favor.
Bland, scored 13 of his game-high 19 points in a five-minute stretch, boosting UNO to a 28-18 lead with 7:33 to play in the half.
The Warriors closed the gap in the final two minutes of the half, scoring five straight points, including a layup just before the buzzer by Malvik to cut UNO's lead to 37-34.
Zellman's three-pointer with 15:37 left in the game put Winona State up 39-45 before the Mavs again battled back to take the lead.
Bland gave UNO a 49-48 lead with 9:01 left on a pair of free shots and Levy Jones' short jumper put the Mavs out front 53-52 with 5:39 left, but that would be the last time UNO led.
Abdul Mills tied the game twice, at 55 with 4:28 left on a layup and with a three-pointer with 2:35 left, 58-58.
Malvik led Winona State with 20 points and John Smith scored 11 and pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds. Zellman finished with 12 points and eight rebounds.
