Mavericks Sign Bellevue WestaEUs Michael Jenkins

University of Nebraska at Omaha Coach Kevin McKenna said today that all-state guard Michael Jenkins of state champion Bellevue West High School has signed a national letter of intent to attend UNO and play basketball for the Mavericks next season.
"Mike is a very skilled player who can shoot the ball well," McKenna said. "He also comes from a winning program, so he understands what it takes to succeed and play at a high level."
Jenkins was an all-Class A and second-team all-Nebraska player for the Thunderbirds. The 6-3, 165-pound Jenkins averaged 16.6 points, five rebounds and three assists per game for Coach Doug Woodard's team, which has posted 23-2 and 27-1 records in winning two straight state championships. Jenkins shot 59 percent from the field and connected on 42 percent of his three-point shots.
Jenkins is the son of Shawntae Jenkins.
Last fall, the Mavericks also signed 6-11, 235-pound Gabriel Zwiener, an all-state player from Pleasanton (Neb.) High School who earned all-class, all-state tournament honors this year. Another signee, Omaha Bryan High School guard Matt Culliver signed last November, but has decided to attend junior college.
The Mavericks last season finished 23-6 after winning their second-straight North Central Conference regular season championship. UNO advanced to the NCAA II tournament for a third time in McKenna's four seasons and a second straight year.
