3rd Team JC All-American Signs with Mavericks

University of Nebraska at Omaha women's basketball coach Patty Patton Shearer said today that Ashley Freerksen, a 5-11 forward from Des Moines, Iowa, has signed a national letter of intent to attend UNO next fall.
Freerksen (pronounced Free-erk-sun) was the leading scorer last season for her Des Moines Area Community College team that finished the year 24-9. Freerksen averaged 15.5 points and 9.5 rebounds as well as 1.5 steals per game while earning first-team all-region and third-team All-America honors under Coach Ben Conrad.
She was a two-time first-team all-Iowa player at Des Moines Dowling Catholic High School and finished her career as the school's all-time leading scorer under Coach John Wilkinson. She also earned first-team all-conference honors three straight years while helping lead Dowling to four consecutive state tournament appearances.
"We are very excited to have Ashley as part of our program," Patton Shearer said. "Ashley is a fearless competitor with an intense will to win. She is a very versatile player with the ability to face the basket and make superb plays, in addition to being able to create great scoring opportunities in the low post."
The daughter of Roger and Kelli Freerksen, Ashley is planning to major in criminal justice at UNO.
The Mavericks, in their first season under Patton Shearer in 2004-05, were 14-14 and recorded one of the biggest turnarounds of the year in NCAA II, rebounding from a five-win season in 2003-04.
