Women's Basketball Signs Nebraska All-Stater

University of Nebraska at Omaha head women's basketball coach Patty Patton Shearer announced today the signing of Nebraska all-stater Cassy Drueppel to a national letter of intent to attend UNO and play basketball for the Mavericks next season.
Drueppel, a 5-6 guard from Lincoln, Neb. (Southeast HS), earned 2005 first team Super State honors by the Lincoln Journal-Star and was named captain of the all-state team, while leading the Knights to the 2005 Nebraska State Tournament. She was also selected the 2005 Omaha World-Herald first team Class A all-state team.
"Cassy is a cerebral player who has great offensive skills. She can create off of the dribble and she is a very crafty scorer. What makes her fun to watch is her competitive edge and fiery attitude," said Patton Shearer.
Drueppel averaged 18.6 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game during the 2004-05 season and was selected to participate in the Nebraska Coaches Association All-Star Game in July. She holds the school record for most points in a season.
Drueppel, who was coached at Lincoln Southeast by John Larsen, is an excellent student with a 4.01 GPA and is a four-year Honor Roll student. She is the daughter of Julie and Marty Drueppel and plans to major in criminal justice at UNO.
"Cassy comes from a great program at Lincoln Southeast and we are excited to have her in our Maverick family," added Patton Shearer.
Drueppel joins earlier signee, Ashley Freerksen, a 5-11 forward from Des Moines, Iowa (Des Moines Area Community College).
The Mavericks, in their first season under Patton Shearer in 2004-05, were 14-14 and recorded one of the biggest turnarounds of the year in NCAA II, rebounding from a five-win season in 2003-04.
