Mavericks Split With North Dakota

Grand Forks, N.D. -- The Nebraska-Omaha softball team split a North Central Conference doubleheader with North Dakota Friday afternoon, winning the first game, 4-1, before dropping the second, 4-0. North Dakota's victory in the second game marked the Sioux's first victory over UNO in their all-time series, which UNO now leads, 33-1.
In the first game, Taren Tuley struck out seven Sioux batters, while scattering five hits and one run in five innings to improve to 3-0 on the year. Cheris Kuster recorded her fourth save of the year by not allowing a hit, while striking out three.
Shortstop Leslie Svoboda went 2-for-4 at the plate with one RBI and one run scored. Center fielder Katie Novotny went 2-for-4 with a triple and one run scored.
Second baseman Missy Kelly belted a two-run single to left field in the top of the third inning to give the Mavericks a 4-0 cushion.
In the second game, Sioux pitcher Tara Petersen threw a two-hitter, while striking out 13 Maverick batters, while allowing three walks.
Kelsey Warnings's triple in the fourth inning and Nicole Vos' single in the seventh were the only Maverick hits in the loss.
Freshman pitcher Cayte Billman allowed eight hits and four earned runs in 4 2/3 innings to drop to 5-3 on the season.
The Mavericks, who are now 29-17-1 overall and 6-3-1 in the NCC, will be idle until next Friday, April 29, when they conclude the North Central Conference regular season with a 3:30 p.m. doubleheader at Minnesota State, Mankato.
