Mavs Sweep St. Cloud State to Open NCC Play

OMAHA, NE --The Nebraska-Omaha baseball team won its inaugural home games at The Ballpark at Boys Town Saturday, sweeping St. Cloud State 4-3 and 7-5 to open North Central Conference play.
The Mavericks trailed 2-1 after four innings in the opener but chased St.Cloud starter Nate Nelson in the fifth inning with three runs on four hits. Jeff Hansen led off the fifth with a double to right field and scored two pitches later on a triple by Chad Leon. Bryan Frew then belted a two-run homer to give the Mavs a 4-2 lead.
UNO starter Troy Cloyd pitched his sixth complete game of the year, scattering three hits while striking out six to improve to 5-2 on the season.
The Mavericks overcame a 3-0 deficit in the second game, rallying for five runs in the third inning. UNO sent nine batters to the plate in the third and then picked up insurance runs in the fourth and sixth innings on sacrifice fly balls. Nick Russell pitch six strong innings and fanned seven for his fourth win of the season. Brandon Kelley came on in the final inning to pick up his fourth save of the year.
Chad Leon drove in five runs on the day and Bryan Frew collected four hits.
The two-game sweep snapped the Huskies' 10-game winning streak. UNO (21-9, 2-0 NCC) will host St. Cloud State again on Sunday with a doubleheader
starting at noon.
