Mavs Survive Truman, Advance to 2nd Round

EMPORIA, Kan.--After jumping to a 7-0 lead after five, No 5 seed UNO scored on an error in the top of the eighth inning and used all four pitchers to defeat No. 4 seed Truman State 8-7 in eight innings in the first round of the North Central Regional tournament in Emporia, Kan.
In the fourth inning, UNO leaped to a 5-0 lead on a two-RBI single from Brianna Cataudella, followed by three-straight RBI singles by Kellyn Kramolisch, Katie Novotny, and Alison Jergenson.
The Mavericks added two runs in the fifth on a one-out two-run home run by Leslie Svoboda, her third of the season.
In the bottom of the seventh, TSU's Loni Wedemeier sent Cayte Billman's first pitch over the left-center fence to tie the game at seven. UNO ended the Truman threat on a line-drive double play, stranding the winning run at second.
UNO moved the score to 8-7 in the top of the eight, with a bloop single by senior Erin Bluml. Briana Cataudella was then hit by a pitch to put runners at first and second. Kellyn Kramolisch moved the runners over with a sacrifice bunt before Alison Jergenson sent a hot shot off the shortstop, scoring Bluml from third.
Cheris Kuster held off Truman in the bottom of the inning to raise her record to 11-10, pitching 1 2/3 inning striking out two.
UNO (35-21-1) will now face top-seed and host Emporia State today at 3 p.m. in the double-elimination tournament.
